About Dr Azzika
Dr Azzika Tanko Yussif is the Acting Director of Programmes at the African Ministers’ Council on Water. He is a policy and programme specialist with over 17 years of experience in providing strategic leadership for programmes, policy advocacy, influencing, capacity building and knowledge management on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and water resources management across sub-Saharan Africa. He has strong experience leading programmes on child protection, basic education, public health and climate-smart agriculture. He is also extensively experienced in leading policy dialogues, providing platforms for citizen-government engagements for more and better WASH investments.
Experience
Dr Azzika has worked with a number of INGOs, including WaterAid as the West Africa Regional Learning Centre Coordinator for Citizen-Government engagements, Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) as the Policy, Advocacy and Research Lead for Ghana and Right To Play International as the Program Manager for Ghana. As the project Coordinator of the Northern Development Society (NODESO), he led the design, management and implementation of a climate-smart agriculture programme that built smallholder farmers’ capacity for improved productivity, afforestation, agro-ecological farming and effective land use. Dr Azzika, in his early career, led a community child survival campaign initiative for the Catholic Relief Service (CRS), improving child survival and maternal and safe motherhood in several communities in Northern Ghana.
He has a PhD in Migration Studies with a focus on migration, climate change and food security relationships from the University of Ghana, as well as a Master’s degree in development studies with a specialization in population, poverty and social development from the International Institute of Social Studies, in the Netherlands.
